Efforts ongoing to ensure quality is maintained in primary education: President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Government is actively working to ensure that the quality of primary education is maintained and strengthened, amid concerns over declining student performance in core subjects.

Speaking on the third episode of the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast, hosted by the President’s Office, the President highlighted that student achievement in primary grades has been falling steadily in recent years. He noted that declining results in key subjects such as Dhivehi and Mathematics often have wider implications, affecting performance in other areas of learning.

To address these challenges, the President stated that the Government is prioritising efforts to identify the root causes of poor academic outcomes and take appropriate corrective measures. He emphasised that improving the quality of primary education is vital for students’ long-term academic success.

The President also underlined the importance of building a strong educational foundation from the early years, stating that better teaching quality and stronger classroom delivery are central to reversing the trend. He added that this area, which had not previously received sufficient attention, is now being given higher priority.

While acknowledging that progress will take time, the President said efforts are already underway and that the Government expects to see measurable improvements year by year.

Recent trends suggest that weak primary-level performance may be contributing to lower national O-Level exam results, particularly in the percentage of students passing three and five subjects.

These remarks follow the Presidential Address 2025, in which the President reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening primary education. As part of this broader focus, work is also ongoing to enhance the quality of teaching nationwide.
