The Maldivian Parliament has approved an extension of its current session until December 15, following a motion put forward by Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

The extension was deemed necessary to address a number of pending agenda items, as the session was originally scheduled to conclude on November 30.

The motion received overwhelming support, with 68 votes in favour and 11 members voting against it. Speaker Abdul Raheem explained that the extension was essential to ensure the completion of significant legislative work.

The current session began later than initially planned due to delays in setting up a new video room aimed at resolving broadcasting issues. Under parliamentary regulations, the third and final session of the year was supposed to run from October 1 to November 30, but the extension now allows crucial work to be completed before the year’s end.

Looking ahead, the first parliamentary session of next year will begin in February and continue until the end of April, with a second session scheduled to run from June to August.
