Details of the Departure Tax and Airport Development Fee, charged under the Airport Taxes and Fees Act, have been made publicly available.

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) announced significant changes to Departure Taxes, effective from December 1, 2024. These revisions, implemented through amendments to the Airport Taxes and Fees Act, will lead to increased charges for outbound travellers, differentiated by their class of travel.

According to MIRA, the updated Departure Tax rates are:

- Economy Class: USD 12 for Maldivians, USD 50 for foreigners.

- Business Class: USD 120 for all passengers.

- First Class: USD 240 for all passengers.

- Private Jet Passengers: USD 480 for all passengers.

Concurrently, the Airport Development Fee will be suspended as of November 30, 2024. Exemptions from the new Departure Tax will apply to diplomats, transit passengers with layovers of less than 24 hours, and children below two years of age.

MIRA has clarified that the additional revenue generated from these revised fees will be allocated towards the maintenance and expansion of Velana International Airport, the nation’s primary air transport hub.

A detailed breakdown of Departure Tax and Airport Development Fee data from 2017 to 2023, can be found in the publication section on MIRA’s official website.
