The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that reducing the number of bats and crows may be considered as a last resort if other solutions do not effectively address the damage caused to crops.
This was discussed during a recent consultation meeting between the EPA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare. The meeting focused on finding ways to reduce the growing impact of wildlife, particularly crows and bats, on farmers across the Maldives.
The session was attended by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya, along with senior officials from the Ministry and the EPA. Discussions highlighted increasing reports of bats and crows damaging crops in various parts of the country, and the need for targeted solutions to support farmers.
Participants at the meeting stressed the importance of first identifying the population and distribution of these animals on affected islands. The EPA stated that once this information is collected, it will help determine the most appropriate and least harmful methods for addressing the issue.
Although population control may be considered, the EPA emphasised that it would only be pursued if no other options prove effective. The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare is continuing its efforts to explore and implement measures to protect agricultural livelihoods.
