The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has confirmed discussions with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to integrate AgroNat’s purpose-built boats into the corporation’s operations to boost agricultural transport.

The initiative is designed to improve logistics for farmers by enabling faster and more reliable delivery of fresh produce to markets across the country. MTCC has already prepared draft ferry schedules and shared them with the ministry, which is reviewing the plans to align them with farmers’ needs.

AgroNat boats have been specially designed for agricultural purposes and adapted to withstand local maritime challenges, including those posed by climate change. Each vessel is equipped with solar-powered cold and dry storage facilities to maintain produce quality, as well as dedicated areas for crew accommodation. The design also emphasises eco-friendly operations by reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

According to the ministry, the project’s larger objective is to provide farmers with sustainable, profitable, and timely transport services. Officials noted that reliable access to markets will help reduce post-harvest losses and increase the availability of fresh produce nationwide, supporting both farmer livelihoods and food security.
