The National Forum for Civil Society, aimed at empowering community organisations and enhancing their participation in national development, has officially commenced.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Minister for Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed. Organised by the Ministry of Youth, the forum aims to identify the challenges faced by civil society organisations, raise awareness of their role in tackling social issues, and foster greater collaboration between groups nationwide.

In his address, Minister Waheed noted that most civil society organisations in the Maldives are currently driven by philanthropists who receive little financial assistance or incentives. He stressed the importance of creating a more sustainable model by providing organisations with financial support, recognition, and opportunities to implement programmes. According to the minister, empowering civil society is essential to ensuring that independent voices can continue to make constructive contributions to national dialogue and development.

The minister also highlighted that national-level forums would strengthen organisational capacity and expand activities, enabling civil society groups to become more sustainable and influential. He added that stronger organisations will play a greater role in decision-making processes and emerge as vibrant institutions contributing to national progress.

A total of 69 civil society organisations, 30 Women’s Development Committees, and six Atoll Councils are taking part in the two-day forum. The initiative also fulfils a key pledge from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential manifesto to enhance the role of civil society in governance and development.
