A new Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) has been established five miles northwest of Gaafu Alifu Fulhangi to support and sustain fisheries in the region.
Its primary purpose is to enhance fishing opportunities for local communities, particularly benefiting young fishermen and those engaged in recreational fishing. Authorities expect the installation to make fishing activities more efficient and accessible.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources stated that the introduction of FADs is a key component of the Government’s fisheries development policy. More devices are planned for installation across the Maldives in the near future as part of efforts to strengthen the industry and provide greater support to fishing communities.
FADs in the Maldives are generally categorised into two types: those used for tuna fishing and those designed for sports and recreational fishing.
The Ministry also noted that additional FAD projects are in progress, including the installation of a device at Shaviyani Funadhoo, which is scheduled to commence by December this year.
