First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has emphasised the importance of creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, noting that such opportunities support their independence, confidence and overall well-being.
She made the remarks at a ceremony held at the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) to hand over employment certificates to newly hired staff with disabilities.
The First Lady said that securing employment helps individuals develop new social connections, gain financial stability and build routines that contribute to both mental and physical health. She added that as people with disabilities become more independent, daily tasks that once required family assistance can increasingly be managed on their own.
“They benefit not only from getting jobs. They benefit their families and the country,” the First Lady said.
She noted that expanding employment opportunities for persons with disabilities is a key priority of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
STELCO has employed 30 individuals with special needs as part of its ongoing commitment to inclusive workplace practices. Other State Owned Enterprises have also taken similar steps. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) recently provided job opportunities to 40 persons with disabilities.
To date, the Government has facilitated over 350 employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, reflecting its commitment to building a compassionate and inclusive society.
