Zakat House disburses MVR 1.5m for medical aid and welfare in November

Maldives Zakat House has disbursed over MVR 1.5 million from the Zakat Fund to support medical treatment and welfare assistance for the poor and needy, figured published by the agency has revealed.

In November 2025 alone, medical assistance was provided to 165 individuals, with total disbursements amounting to MVR 1.53 million. Cancer treatment accounted for the largest share at MVR 449,493, followed by MVR 63,607.50 for heart disease, MVR 50,886 each for transplants and neurological disorders, MVR 25,443 for respiratory diseases, and MVR 33,924 for kidney-related care. A further MVR 796,320.25 was spent on treatment for other illnesses.

Zakat House also disbursed MVR 84,200 in general assistance during November, with an additional MVR 53,750 scheduled for release. Funding was also allocated to religious and educational causes, including MVR 100,398.93 to support higher education students and MVR 353,218.23 for religious programmes. Spending on Quran education included MVR 69,165.08 under Ibn Sabeel and MVR 1.03 million for the sake of Allah.

Meanwhile, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said a Zakat Bill submitted to Parliament aims to modernise and strengthen the national Zakat system, making it among the most effective in the Islamic world.
