Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has stated that the State faces negative consequences when councils do not function as an extension of the Government.

Minister Dr Khaleel made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the People’s National Congress (PNC) campaign office for the North Galolhu constituency.

The Minister noted that the Decentralization Act mandates councils to provide services to citizens at the local level. He said candidates contesting the upcoming elections on the PNC ticket are individuals committed to listening to public concerns and working closely with communities.

Minister Dr Khaleel stated that councils are not intended to act as oversight bodies holding the Government accountable. Instead, he said their role is to support the implementation of Government policies and help ensure that services reach citizens effectively.

Referring to a major Google project planned for Addu Atoll, Dr Khaleel said the council had created obstacles when the Government attempted to secure land required for the development. He noted that such actions can delay national development initiatives.

Minister Dr Khaleel also stated that the current Government does not conceal matters from the public. He added that several commitments made to citizens during the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration are now being fulfilled by the current Government.

The Minister concluded by urging the public to participate in the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for 4 April and to support PNC candidates.
