Maldives and Oman solidify decades-long friendship with new agreements

The Maldives and Oman have further deepened their long-standing relationship with the signing of two significant agreements during a meeting between Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi.
The agreements include a Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement for holders of Diplomatic, Special, Service, and Official Passports, and a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, aimed at facilitating diplomatic engagement and enhancing strategic dialogue between the two nations.
During comprehensive discussions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman, the ministers reflected on over four decades of diplomatic ties rooted in shared Islamic heritage and values.
They explored opportunities for enhanced collaboration in trade, tourism, education, and investment promotion, while highlighting the importance of fostering people-to-people connections.
Minister Dr Khaleel expressed gratitude for Oman’s steadfast support to the Maldives and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to further strengthening the bilateral partnership.
Plans to convene the first round of political consultations at a mutually convenient time were also discussed, demonstrating both nations’ dedication to advancing shared goals and unlocking opportunities for mutual development.
As part of his official visit, Minister Dr Khaleel met with Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, Sayyed Asaad bin Tariq Al Said. They exchanged greetings from their respective leaders, with the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirming Oman’s commitment to bolstering ties.
Their discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, tourism, fisheries, and investment, with Minister Dr Khaleel expressing appreciation for Oman’s longstanding support to the Maldives.
Minister Dr Khaleel also met with Sultan bin Salim bin Said Al Habsi, Omani Minister of Finance, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation, exploring investment opportunities, and aligning development policies to foster stronger economic partnerships.
Minister Dr Khaleel was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Dr Hala Hameed, Secretary for Bilateral Affairs, Fathimath Naeema, Senior Under Secretary, and Mohamed Shujau, Assistant Director. His official visit is set to conclude on Friday.
