Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said arrangements will be introduced from 1 April to simplify visa extension for tourists staying in the Maldives beyond the current 30-day period.

Addressing the issue at a press briefing on measures to manage the impact of the Middle East conflict, the minister said the initiative is being developed in coordination with Maldives Immigration to introduce a faster and more streamlined extension process.

He said under the revised system, tourists will be able to complete visa extensions within 48 hours through an online application and payment process, with fewer documentation requirements.

Minister Thoriq noted that the changes come as the tourism sector faces challenges linked to the ongoing conflict, adding that around 30 per cent of tourists arriving in the Maldives are from the Middle East.

He also said efforts are underway to introduce additional visa categories, including special visas for content creators and remote workers, which are expected to support the guesthouse sector and diversify tourism offerings.
