State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has stated that extensive efforts are underway to ensure electricity services are provided in line with rising demand.
Speaking on behalf of the company, STELCO Managing Director Dr Ali Azuwar said the company’s electricity generation capacity across the Greater Malé Region and other islands where it provides services has now increased to 222 megawatts.
Dr Azuwar said work is currently ongoing to further strengthen and maintain the reliability of electricity services in the areas served by the company.
He further noted that, in addition to the Greater Malé Region, STELCO now provides electricity services to islands across four nearby atolls. The company is also managing water and sewerage services in several islands.
Highlighting the rapid increase in electricity demand in the Malé area, Dr Azuwar said the rise in population and the construction of high-rise buildings have contributed to a steady increase in electricity consumption every year.
He added that preparations must be made annually to cater to the increasing electricity load and future demand.
STELCO’s service network has expanded significantly in recent years. Under changes introduced to the Government’s operational structure, services previously managed by Fenaka Corporation in atolls from Baa Atoll to Meemu Atoll have now been transferred to STELCO.
The company described the move as part of efforts to further improve and strengthen the quality of services provided to residents in those regions.
STELCO stated that its goal is to provide reliable utility services supported by modern infrastructure in line with the country’s growing population and development needs.
