President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that all Government ministries are working to achieve full compliance with the Right to Information (RTI) Act's disclosure requirements by the end of this week.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President's Office, President Dr Muizzu said ministries are currently finalising the publication of information that State institutions are legally required to make publicly available.
The RTI Act, which came into force in 2014, requires Government institutions to proactively disclose key information about their operations at least once a year. This includes details of an institution's mandate, responsibilities, organisational structure, services provided to the public, complaint mechanisms and information on complaints received.
Although the legislation has been in force for more than a decade, the Information Commissioner's Office has repeatedly highlighted shortcomings in compliance across Government institutions, noting that many agencies have not fully met their disclosure obligations.
President Dr Muizzu said significant progress has now been made, adding that four ministries have already completed the publication of all information required under the law.
The President said the remaining ministries are also nearing completion and expressed confidence that all ministries would achieve full compliance within the week.
"We are aiming for every ministry to achieve 100 per cent compliance and complete publication of the required information before the end of this week," President Dr Muizzu said.
The President also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve responses to RTI requests submitted by the public.
He said ministries are working to ensure requests are answered within the statutory timeframe and that measures are being taken to clear outstanding requests. President Dr Muizzu added that all pending RTI applications are expected to be addressed in accordance with the deadlines set out in the law.
