A team of experts from China Railway Design Corporation has arrived in the Maldives to begin preparatory work for the road development project in Malé and Vilimalé.

In a post on X, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua said China attaches great importance to addressing road-related concerns in the Maldives and is committed to working with the government to improve road and drainage infrastructure.

He noted that the project aims to enhance transport networks and drainage systems, bringing long-term benefits to residents.

The Maldives and China signed a Letter of Exchange in October last year to commence the design phase of the Chinese-funded road development project.

The roads will be developed under a USD 130 million grant assistance package agreed between the two countries during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to China.

The Ambassador stated that the visiting team will carry out site inspections and design-related work required before construction begins. Chinese experts have already conducted preliminary studies for the project.
