President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that no Government funds have been used for any of his personal travel since assuming office.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President's Office on Monday, President Dr Muizzu said all personal and family travel expenses have been covered privately and that no public funds have been spent on such trips.
The President said that although he continues to carry out official duties while on leave or travelling privately, he does not believe the costs associated with his personal travel should be borne by the State.
President Dr Muizzu noted that a staff member from the President's Office often accompanies him during private trips to facilitate official work. He explained that the staff member carries the equipment and resources necessary to process official documents, correspondence and other Government business remotely.
He further stated that he has, on some occasions, personally covered expenses incurred by accompanying staff, despite the President's Office maintaining that such costs relate to official duties and can be paid by the State.
President Dr Muizzu reiterated that neither his own travel expenses nor those of his spouse and children have been funded by the Government.
The President also said that while some former Presidents had undertaken overseas travel at Government expense, he has chosen not to follow that practice and has maintained the same approach throughout his presidency.
