Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas has revealed that work is underway to connect three northern atolls through a domestic air connectivity network following the success of the airline's southern connectivity project.

Speaking on State media, MD Iyas said the southern connectivity initiative was launched under the Government's efforts to improve domestic transport and ease travel between atolls. Flights under the project commenced on February 1 this year.

He said the service currently operates between Gan, Fuvahmulah and Kooddoo/Kaadehdhoo using 15-seat Twin Otter aircraft, with daily flights connecting the islands. Additional flights are also operated on certain days in connection with SriLankan Airlines' international services to Gan.

Highlighting the response to the service, Iyas said more than 2,900 passengers have used the southern connectivity flights so far. He added that the service is operating with a load factor of more than 70 per cent and has provided significant convenience to travellers in the southern atolls.

Following the success of the initiative, Iyas said Island Aviation is now working with the Government to establish a similar network in the north. He said the project aims to connect Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani atolls by the end of the year.

The Government has identified improving domestic transport as a key priority and is undertaking several projects to strengthen air and sea connectivity across the Maldives. The Administration has also announced plans to expand Maldivian's international operations and add more wide-body aircrafts to the national carrier's fleet.
