More than 80,000 passengers have travelled on Maldivian's wide-body aircraft since it entered service, according to Island Aviation Services Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas.

Speaking to State media, Iyas said the Airbus A330-200, which joined the national airline's fleet on January 6, 2025, has played a significant role in expanding Maldivian's international operations.

China was the first market served by the aircraft, with flights launched to three destinations. Iyas said more than 40,000 passengers have travelled on China routes alone, including over 20,000 Chinese tourists visiting the Maldives. The aircraft has also operated flights to India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

Iyas added that the aircraft has transported more than 80,000 passengers and over 18,000 tonnes of cargo since commencing operations. He described the achievement as a major contribution to economic activity and business growth, noting that it marked an important milestone in the expansion of the national carrier.

The 264-seat aircraft currently operates both scheduled and charter flights, including Hajj and Umrah services to Saudi Arabia, flights to destinations in China, India and Bangladesh, as well as the recently launched direct service to Australia.

The Government has announced plans to further expand Maldivian's international network and increase the airline's fleet. Island Aviation is currently working to bring a second wide-body aircraft into service before the end of the year.
