Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has advised travellers to expect congestion at Velana International Airport during the arrival period of Maldivian Hajj pilgrims this week, citing an anticipated increase in passenger and visitor traffic.
In a travel advisory issued on Tuesday, MACL said large numbers of pilgrims, travellers and individuals receiving arriving passengers are expected at the airport on June 5, 7, 8 and 9, when Hajj pilgrims are scheduled to return to the Maldives.
The company warned that the increased movement of people is likely to result in heavy traffic around the airport area and limited parking availability during the arrival dates.
To minimise delays and ease congestion, MACL urged travellers to consider using public ferry and bus services when travelling to and from the airport on those days.
The advisory comes as Maldivian pilgrims begin returning home following the completion of this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. MACL thanked travellers for their cooperation and understanding during the busy travel period.
