President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed the Maldives’ election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term, marking the first time the country has secured a seat on the Council in its 60 years of membership of the United Nations.
In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu described the election as a historic milestone and said it reflected the trust and confidence the international community places in the Maldives, as well as the country's commitment to constructive multilateral engagement.
Highlighting the Maldives’ perspective as a Small Island Developing State, the President noted that the country understands first-hand the challenges faced by vulnerable nations, including climate change, economic resilience and sustainable development. He said the seat on ECOSOC would provide the Maldives with a stronger platform to advocate for the priorities and aspirations of Small Island Developing States and developing countries around the world.
President Dr Muizzu also reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening international cooperation, advancing sustainable development and contributing to a more resilient multilateral system.
