The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast deteriorating weather conditions across the country today, with widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds expected in several regions.
MET said showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely across much of the Maldives, while some islands may experience heavy rainfall.
In the southern atolls, winds are expected to blow from the south and southwest at speeds ranging between 8 and 18 miles per hour. Elsewhere in the country, southwest and westerly winds are forecast at speeds of 13 to 23 miles per hour.
The weather agency also warned that wind gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour during squally conditions.
Sea conditions are expected to be rough across the central and northern regions, while seas in the south are forecast to be moderate to rough, becoming rough during periods of bad weather.
MET stated that strong winds are likely to persist across the northern and central Maldives until Friday. While rough seas are expected to continue across large parts of the country, rainfall is forecast to gradually ease from tomorrow.
The weather agency has advised the public, particularly those in the northern and central atolls, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as adverse weather conditions continue.
