ECOSOC election reflects UN confidence in Maldives: Minister Iruthisham

Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam has stated that the Maldives' election to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027-2029 term reflects the confidence and recognition the country enjoys within the United Nations.
The Minister made the remarks following the Maldives' successful election to ECOSOC.
Minister Iruthisham described the achievement as a historic milestone and a source of national pride. She said the result reflects the success of the Government's foreign policy and diplomatic engagement efforts.
The Minister noted that the election demonstrates growing international recognition of the Maldives' foreign policy priorities and the country's increasing role in global affairs.
She further stated that the outcome highlights international support for the Maldives' efforts to promote sustainable development, address the challenges posed by climate change and advocate for the interests and rights of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The Maldives secured election to ECOSOC with 183 votes. Malaysia and the South Korea were also elected to the three seats allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group.
The country's term on ECOSOC will commence on 1 January 2027 and conclude on 31 December 2029.
The election marks the first time the Maldives has been elected to ECOSOC since joining the United Nations in 1965.
