President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government aims to establish modern waste management facilities across the Maldives within the next two years as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental protection.

Speaking in the first episode of The Pulse, a podcast series focused on national issues, the President outlined the Government's environmental priorities and ongoing sustainability initiatives.

He said development projects are being implemented with environmental considerations in mind, highlighting plans to plant five million trees across the country and increase the share of electricity generated from renewable sources to 33 per cent.

The President noted that the Government's environmental agenda includes improving waste management systems in islands, strengthening coastal protection measures, and enhancing the country's resilience to climate change.

He said the Administration aims to complete the installation of modern waste management facilities and shore protection projects in all islands within the next two years.

Addressing land reclamation projects, President Dr Muizzu said such initiatives remain important for national development and are being carried out in ways that minimise environmental impacts. He cited the Rasmalé project as an example, noting that coral restoration and propagation efforts are being conducted alongside reclamation works.

The President also said the Government is prioritising programmes to restore fish habitats and support marine ecosystems in an effort to reduce the environmental impacts of development projects.
