Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Government will continue introducing globally recognised digital platforms and technologies to create more opportunities for Maldivian youth.
Minister Saeed made the remarks during an information session held following the launch of PayPal services in the Maldives. PayPal was officially introduced to the Maldives on 15 June through a collaboration between the Government and Ooredoo Maldives. Ooredoo received the inward remittance licence required to provide the service, which is now available through the company's mFaisaa platform.
Speaking at the session, Minister Saeed said the Government is working to take the Maldivian economy to another level and that more internationally recognised platforms similar to PayPal will be introduced in the future.
He said the introduction of PayPal is a major step forward for the Maldivian economy, allowing payments to be received seamlessly and in real time while expanding opportunities for individuals and businesses to participate in the global marketplace.
The minister noted that the Maldives cannot rely solely on tourism to achieve long-term economic growth and highlighted digital transformation as one of the key priorities outlined in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's manifesto. He reiterated the Government's target of increasing the contribution of the digital economy to 15 per cent of the country's GDP by 2030.
Minister Saeed also said leading global technology companies hold the Maldives in high regard and expressed confidence that the country's growing digital infrastructure would help attract further opportunities in the future.
