Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced plans to increase classroom time allocated to Dhivehi, Islamic Studies and Mathematics for Key Stage 1 students from next year as part of ongoing revisions to the national curriculum.

Speaking at the Aminiya School Prize Day ceremony on Thursday evening, Minister Dr Shafeeu said the curriculum, first introduced in 2015, is undergoing a comprehensive review after remaining largely unchanged for more than a decade. He noted that the Ministry is reassessing how curriculum content is structured and delivered to better meet educational needs.

Minister Dr Shafeeu said the review follows the completion of Grade 10 by the first cohort of students who studied under the current curriculum during the 2025–2026 academic year. He explained that the revisions are being informed by the outcomes and findings from that cohort's experience.

As part of the planned changes, the Ministry intends to allocate additional teaching time to Dhivehi, Islamic Studies and Mathematics at the Key Stage 1 level. It is also considering increasing the amount of classroom time dedicated to language learning.
