The Government is working to find a solution to the shortage of permanent imams in mosques across several islands of the Maldives.
Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the issue stems from the growing number of mosques and a lack of qualified imams in some islands.
As part of efforts to address the problem, the ministry is exploring ways to create more employment opportunities for students who completed O-level and interested in Islamic studies. The ministry is also considering introducing an annual examination for individuals seeking to become imams, including those who have not completed formal imam training or related courses.
Minister Dr Shaheem said consultations are ongoing with relevant authorities and that further details on the proposed measures will be announced once discussions are completed.
The Government has been undertaking efforts to increase the number of imams and improve the quality of religious services provided in mosques. Measures have also been introduced to improve remuneration and benefits for imams across the country.
