Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Hussain Manik, widely known as Banbukeyo Hussain Manik, has alleged that the party has abandoned its founding principles.
Hussain made the remarks in a social media post shared to mark the MDP's anniversary.
Sharing a photograph from the MDP gathering held at Republic Square on 12 and 13 August 2004, Hussain said that, after 21 years of the party's existence, it was imperative to reflect on why many of those who helped build the party had distanced themselves from it.
He alleged that the MDP is now under the influence of people who do not understand democratic principles and appealed directly to party members, urging them to move forward with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu towards what he described as a new era of development.
Hussain was one of the MDP's most prominent activists and was at the forefront of many of the party's activities. He also worked extensively to promote the party's ideology and principles, including by organising meetings at his residence.
However, he said he eventually left the party after its leadership, in his view, strayed from the principles it once championed and instead pursued its own agendas.
The MDP is currently facing a significant internal power struggle, particularly between former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed. Hussain alleged that many supporters had become disillusioned with the party as it increasingly focused on internal power struggles rather than advocating for the rights and interests of the public.
