President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 3,280 users have linked their accounts to the newly introduced PayPal service in the Maldives.
Speaking at Monday's press briefing, the President said the service has received a strong response since its launch. He revealed that 3,280 users have linked their accounts to PayPal, while 2,159 have already activated their digital wallets.
President Dr Muizzu said previous administrations had attempted to introduce PayPal to the Maldives without success. He said his Administration made the initiative a priority from its first day in office, ultimately bringing the service to the country. He added that the Government would now focus on expanding the services available through the platform.
The President described the introduction of PayPal as a significant step forward for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), noting that it is one of the world's most widely used digital payment platforms. He said the Government would continue working with PayPal and Ooredoo to introduce additional digital payment services and further strengthen the country's digital economy.
PayPal was officially launched in the Maldives on 15 June through a seamless integration with Ooredoo's m-Faisaa platform.
