President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that flats and land plots under the Government's housing schemes will be allocated fairly, with recipients selected solely based on eligibility and without the influence of any individual.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President's Office on Monday, the President said providing housing remains one of the Government's highest priorities, noting that it is an issue that directly affects the lives of thousands of people. He said the allocation process would be carried out transparently and in accordance with the established criteria.
The President said no flats or land plots would be awarded based on personal connections, stressing that housing would only be allocated to applicants who qualify under the approved system.
He said applications for flats are currently being verified and assessed using the approved points-based system. The list of successful applicants will be announced before the end of the year, together with details of the housing project under which each recipient will receive a flat. He added that the recipients of land plots would also be announced within the same timeframe.
Speaking on the progress of housing construction in the Greater Malé Region, President Dr Muizzu said practical works on many of the buildings are expected to begin in July. He expressed confidence that all flats under construction in the Greater Malé Region would be completed by May, June or July 2028.
On the Government's land allocation programme, the President said land plots will be distributed once the reclamation of Rasmalé is completed. He noted that around 60 per cent of the reclamation work has been finished. Although the project experienced delays due to rising fuel prices, preparations are underway to resume full-scale operations using two dredgers, with the aim of completing the reclamation before the end of this year.
Under the Government's 'Housing for All' policy, a total of 58,505 applications have been submitted, including 35,930 applications for flats and 22,575 applications for land plots.
