Dialysis services have been introduced in 11 islands as part of the Government's efforts to expand access to essential healthcare services across the Maldives, the Ministry of Health has said.

Information shared by the ministry with MMTV shows that services have been established on 11 islands since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, under the Government's policy to expand specialist healthcare services to the atolls.

The ministry said dialysis services are also scheduled to begin in nine additional islands before the end of 2026, with implementation work currently underway.

Before the expansion programme began, dialysis treatment was available only at regional and Government hospitals in the Greater Malé Region. As a result, patients requiring regular treatment often had to travel long distances to access care.

Decentralising dialysis services forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's policy to reduce dependence on Malé for healthcare by strengthening services available at hospitals and health centres across the atolls.

To support the expansion, the Government is upgrading healthcare facilities by establishing dedicated dialysis units, developing the required infrastructure, and providing specialised training for healthcare personnel who will operate the service.

Alongside the rollout of dialysis services, the Government is expanding laboratory services nationwide to enable residents to access essential diagnostic tests on their home islands. The Ministry of Health has previously announced that laboratory services are expected to be introduced in 76 islands during this year as part of that initiative.
