A total of 641 people are currently waiting to access drug rehabilitation treatment, with efforts underway to ensure they receive treatment as soon as possible, the National Drug Agency (NDA) has confirmed.
Information shared with MMTV by the NDA shows that the waiting list includes 360 people seeking community-based rehabilitation, 142 people awaiting admission to residential rehabilitation centres, and 139 people seeking methadone treatment.
The agency said reducing the waiting list remains a priority, while the Government continues to expand rehabilitation services across the country by strengthening rehabilitation centres in different regions.
The NDA said 1,082 people are currently undergoing various rehabilitation programmes through the agency. Treatment is currently provided through 12 rehabilitation centres located in Malé, Hulhumalé, Kaafu Himmafushi, Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, Fuvahmulah City, Addu City Hithadhoo, Addu City Hulhudhoo, and Gaafu Alifu Villingili.
As part of efforts to increase treatment capacity, the Government is preparing to begin work this month on a major rehabilitation centre in Kaafu Hinmafushi.
Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has previously announced that the new facility will have the capacity to accommodate 500 people at a time. He said the project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The Government is expanding rehabilitation services nationwide to improve access to treatment for people affected by drug addiction and reduce waiting times.
Addressing drug abuse is one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's key pledges. The Government has expressed confidence that expanding rehabilitation services across the Maldives will provide a more sustainable solution for those seeking treatment.
