Hulhumalé North MP Hussein Shareef has criticised opposition parties, saying they lack a responsible approach to holding the Government accountable.
Shareef made the remarks while speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme.
He said he does not believe opposition parties have the capability to demonstrate that the current Government's policies are wrong. He added that many of those now in the opposition are individuals whom Maldivians had already experienced in government.
Referring to the previous MDP administration, Shareef said many former ministers and senior officials of state-owned companies are now leading opposition political parties.
"The people who led the MDP government are now at the forefront of opposition political parties. These are the same individuals who served as ministers and headed state-owned companies. Maldivians witnessed how they exhausted the country's reserves," he said.
Shareef further said the Administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is restoring and reorganising the system of governance after what he described as shortcomings under the previous MDP administration.
He also alleged that leaders of all opposition political parties share a single agenda, which he said is to secure their respective parties' presidential tickets for the 2028 presidential election.
"They may be sitting together at the same table and showing unity, but I do not believe they have any agenda other than becoming president themselves," he said.
Shareef said if opposition parties intend to fulfil the role of a responsible opposition, they should criticise Government policies responsibly and hold the Government accountable.
