The Government aims to provide better housing options for families currently living in Hiyaa flats to enable them to move into more spacious homes, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new lifts installed at the Hiyaa towers, Minister Dr Muththalib said many families living in the flats, particularly those occupying two-bedroom apartments, are facing difficulties as their families have grown and their current living spaces have become inadequate.
Minister Dr Muththalib said the Government’s housing policy is not limited to providing housing for people waiting for homes. He said equal priority will be given to creating additional housing opportunities for families already living in Hiyaa towers so they can move into more spacious accommodation.
“We will work to address the challenges faced by families living in these flats and provide opportunities for them to move into more spacious homes,” Dr Muthalib said.
He said details of the initiative will be announced at a later date.
The minister also said the previous administration’s allocation of open spaces in the area for housing has reduced the land available for additional public services. However, he said the Government has undertaken several initiatives over the past two years to address challenges faced by residents.
He added that the Government will continue to give special attention to improving the quality of life of residents living in the Hiyaa towers, where each tower is home to approximately 2,000 people.
