Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo Member of Parliament Ibrahim Falah has credited the People's National Congress' (PNC) transparent internal governance for the party's record membership, saying members' confidence in the party has driven its rapid growth despite its relatively recent establishment.
Speaking during MMTV's coverage of the PNC's internal elections, MP Falah said the party now has around 69,000 members, about 20,000 more than the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with more than 40,000 members eligible to vote in Saturday's internal elections.
MP Falah said the increase in membership under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's leadership reflected public confidence in the Government's policies and reforms. He added that the party's internal elections were conducted transparently, with candidates given equal opportunities to contest without influence, while also creating opportunities for young members to advance to senior leadership positions.
The MP said strong internal governance was essential to building resilient political parties, arguing that some parties in the Maldives had weakened or dissolved because of a lack of transparency and fairness in their internal affairs. He claimed this had also reduced public interest in joining such parties and participating in their activities.
Highlighting the importance of strong political institutions, MP Falah said stronger parties contribute to stronger governance and credited President Dr Muizzu with working to further strengthen the PNC. He added that the party was best placed to deliver the changes sought by the public.
