The Maldives has renewed its call for the international community to recognise the State of Palestine during the 2026 United Nations-Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (UN-OIC) Conference on the Question of Jerusalem.
The conference, jointly organised by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), was held under the theme "Jerusalem: The Frontline of Displacement and Annexation and the Key to Just and Lasting Peace." The Maldives was represented by Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Permanent Representative to the OIC, Ahmed Sareer.
Addressing the conference, Sareer highlighted the plight of the Palestinian people and called for an immediate end to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, describing it as a violation of international law and the decisions of the International Court of Justice.
He urged the international community to restore and protect the rights of the Palestinian people while calling for sustained and adequate funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), recognising its critical humanitarian role.
The Maldives also stressed that the legal status, historical significance and religious sanctity of Jerusalem's holy sites can only be safeguarded through an end to the Israeli occupation and broader international recognition of the Palestinian people's right to an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Established through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3376 in 1975, the CEIRPP works to promote and safeguard the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
The Maldives also took part in the 2025 Conference on the Question of Jerusalem in Senegal as part of its continued advocacy for the Palestinian cause and in its capacity as a member of the OIC.
