The Malé Taxi Line is recording between 1,200 to 1,300 passenger trips a day as demand for the Government-operated service continues to grow, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has said.

Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, MTCC Transport Department Manager Mohamed Nashmee said the service has received a strong public response, particularly for journeys within Malé. He said around 30 per cent of journeys made through the service are within the capital, where passengers previously faced difficulties finding taxis.

Nashmee said the number of people using the service continues to increase each day, while MTCC is focused on further improving service standards. He said the Malé Taxi Line has so far completed between 70,000 and 80,000 trips, with demand reaching maximum capacity during peak hours. He added that the service is expected to improve further once part-time drivers begin operating in the coming days.

The Malé Taxi Line was introduced under an initiative by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to provide a long-term solution to taxi shortages across the Greater Malé Region. President Dr Muizzu officially launched the service at a special ceremony held at Hulhumalé Central Park on 2 April.

Operated by MTCC, the service uses a fleet of 150 electric vehicles and is available around the clock. The fleet includes three types of vehicles: Lumin model cars for journeys within Malé, Deepal S05 vehicles for travel between Malé, Hulhumalé, and Velana International Airport, and Deepal S07 vehicles, which can accommodate up to four passengers.
The different vehicle types were selected to meet varying transport needs, including smaller cars suited to Malé's narrow roads and larger vehicles capable of carrying luggage.
