Government-operated optical outlets have now supplied more than 23,000 pairs of prescription glasses, with demand continuing to grow following the expansion of the subsidised service under the national health insurance scheme.

Figures released by the Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) show that 23,847 pairs of prescription glasses have been issued through Government optical outlets established at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumalé Hospital, Addu Equatorial Hospital and Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.

IGMH recorded the highest demand, receiving 13,595 applications and issuing 12,507 pairs of prescription glasses. Hulhumalé Hospital followed with 8,934 applications and 8,247 pairs supplied.

At Addu Equatorial Hospital, 1,746 pairs of prescription glasses have been issued from 2,096 applications, while Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital has supplied 1,347 pairs after receiving 1,650 applications.

MCGH Opticals was introduced to provide affordable prescription glasses under the Aasandha scheme as part of the Government's efforts to improve access to eye care services. The Government previously increased the Aasandha subsidy for prescription glasses from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000, easing the cost of obtaining corrective eyewear.

The service has also been expanded beyond government hospitals. Since 15 January 2026, 18 Aasandha-registered private providers have been authorised to supply prescription glasses under the government's policy. Participating providers include ADK Hospital, EyeCare, Advanced Eye Clinic, City Optical, Vision Clinic, Senahiya and several other healthcare facilities.
