The Elections Commission (EC) has fined two political parties for failing to submit their 2025 audited financial reports within the deadline required under the Political Parties Act.

Under Article 41 of the Political Parties Act, every political party must submit its annual audited financial report to both the Elections Commission and the Auditor General within 90 days of the end of each calendar year. The report must be audited by an auditor approved by the Auditor General.

Political parties were required to submit their 2025 audit reports by 20 May. Four parties met the deadline: the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), the People's National Congress (PNC), Jumhooree Party (JP) and the People's National Front (PNF).

The Adhaalath Party and the Maldives National Party (MNP) have yet to submit their audit reports. Meanwhile, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted its report on 4 June, after the deadline had expired.

The EC said it has fined the Adhaalath Party and the Maldives National Party in accordance with the Political Parties Act and has informed both parties to submit their audit reports.

Once a party submits its audit report, the Auditor General must review its contents and submit the report, together with any recommendations, to the People's Majlis and the Elections Commission within one month.

The Political Parties Act also empowers the Elections Commission to impose a fine of MVR 50,000 on parties that fail to submit their audit reports within the required 90-day period.

Under the law, the Elections Commission must notify a party of its decision to impose a fine within 15 days. The party must pay the fine within one month of being notified. If the fine remains unpaid, the outstanding amount must be deducted from the State funding allocated to the party in the following year's budget.
