Noonu Atoll Hospital Manager Ahmed Maimoon has said significant improvements have been made to the hospital over the past two years, with new services introduced to enhance healthcare access for residents.

Speaking on MMTV’s “Araairu” programme, Maimoon said the hospital has expanded its services following increased demand, particularly after the introduction of dialysis services in 2017.

He highlighted that additional services, including physiotherapy, mental health support and specialised treatment for children with special needs, were introduced during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.

Maimoon said Noonu Atoll Hospital became the first atoll hospital to provide psychiatric services, which were previously only available in Ungoofaaru and Malé. Since the service was launched in 2025, around 200 people have accessed psychiatric care at the hospital.

He also said construction work on a new building for the hospital is currently underway, which is expected to further improve healthcare services. The hospital currently serves a population of around 40,000 people.

Maimoon added that future plans include expanding ICU capacity, introducing speech therapy services and upgrading medical equipment, describing the developments as the most significant progress achieved by the hospital in three decades.
