The Government has disbursed over MVR 143 million in financial assistance to single parents over the past two and a half years, figures shared by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) show.
Information provided by NSPA to MMTV shows that more than MVR 143 million was disbursed to single parents between 2024 and June 2026.
In 2024, NSPA provided MVR 66.7 million in assistance to 3,220 beneficiaries caring for 5,394 children. In 2025, the agency disbursed MVR 59.7 million to 2,949 beneficiaries supporting 5,010 children.
So far this year, NSPA has disbursed MVR 16.6 million to 3,240 single parents. The agency said those beneficiaries are caring for a total of 5,551 children.
The Government decided in December 2025 to increase financial assistance for single mothers and fathers, fulfilling a pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Under the revised scheme, the monthly allowance for each of the first four children was increased from MVR 2,000 to MVR 3,000, raising the maximum monthly assistance to MVR 12,000.
As before, single parents caring for more than four children continue to receive an additional MVR 1,000 per month for each child beyond the fourth.
