Maldivian will become the first airline in the Maldives to operate the DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G after signing an agreement with Canada's De Havilland Aircraft of Canada to acquire the new-generation aircraft.

The purchase forms part of the national airline's efforts to expand its fleet and improve services, particularly for its seaplane operations, which play a key role in transporting tourists to resorts across the country.

Island Aviation Managing Director Ibrahim Iyaz said the Twin Otter Classic 300-G would enhance the passenger experience through the latest technology and greater operational reliability. He noted that seaplane transfers are often visitors' first experience of the Maldives, making service quality an important part of the country's tourism product.

Iyaz said that the aircraft are equipped with advanced avionics, are capable of operating from short runways, and have been designed to improve passenger comfort. He described the acquisition as a significant investment that would strengthen the airline's services to resorts and island communities.

Maldivian currently operates a fleet of 25 aircraft, including Dash 8, ATR, Airbus A330-200 and Airbus A320 aircraft, as well as 11 Twin Otter aircraft serving domestic and seaplane routes.
