Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin conferred upon Hussain Afeef --- President's Office

Tourism pioneer Hussain Afeef was conferred the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI) by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday during the official ceremony to commemorate the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives.

The award recognises Afeef's outstanding contributions to the nation, particularly his pioneering role in developing the Maldives' tourism industry. He was previously conferred the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Muleege Dynasty (ODRMD) in 2013.

Afeef is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of Maldivian tourism. Throughout his career, he has held senior positions in resort operations, tour management and executive leadership, helping shape the country's tourism industry and promote the Maldives in key international markets.

He is a founding member and current Chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI). Among his notable achievements is the development of the world's first solar-powered resort at Gasfinolhu in Kaafu Atoll, which opened in 2014.

Beyond tourism, Afeef has contributed to the hospitality, aviation, banking, and healthcare sectors. He played a key role in the development of Addu International Airport and the establishment of Tree Top Hospital, which introduced tertiary healthcare services, including the Maldives' first fertility clinic.

Through the Ali Fulhu Thuthu Foundation (AFTF), he has supported education and community development projects across the country.

Afeef has received several national honours during his career, including the National Award of Recognition for Public Service in Tourism, the National Award of Honour for Public Service in Tourism, the honorary title of State Dignitary, and the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Muleege Dynasty (ODRMD). The ODRI is the latest recognition of his longstanding contribution to national development.
