President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to deliver lasting solutions to what he described as the country's three biggest social issues: drugs, gang-related crime and illegal immigration.

The President made the remarks while addressing the official ceremony held to mark the Maldives' 61st Independence Day. He said the country's internal affairs were not in the best condition when the Government assumed office, adding that drugs, gang-related crime and the issue of foreigners residing in the Maldives illegally had become the country's most pressing social challenges.

President Dr Muizzu said no previous administration had worked in a meaningful way or produced tangible results in addressing these issues. He added that the Government changed its domestic policy, intending to introduce genuine and lasting solutions.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, the President said the Government has imposed stricter penalties for drug trafficking and introduced legal reforms aimed at preventing drugs from entering the country. He also pointed to measures being implemented through legislative amendments to dismantle gangs, curb gang-related crime and address the issue of illegal immigrants.

He said the Government is already seeing results from these efforts, adding that the country's major social issues can be resolved through determination and effective implementation of policies.

President Dr Muizzu further said the Government would fully implement its policies and continue working with the full support of the Maldivian people, all relevant institutions, partner countries and organisations to achieve lasting solutions to the three issues.

He added that resolving these social challenges is essential for people to experience the country's independence truly.
