WAMCO (Waste Management Corporation) has launched waste collection services in Kulhudhuffushi City this month.

Registered households receive daily garbage collection, with numbers growing from 483 to over 900 of the city's approximately 2,300 households. The service has created local job opportunities and is part of the Government's national plan for sustainable waste management.

WAMCO operates in multiple locations, including Male' City. In Kulhudhuffushi, the service follows a specific schedule: plastic and pulses collection on Sundays and Thursdays, and leaves on Tuesdays. City WAMCO Manager Mohamed Qasim noted this system has reduced waste accumulation in unregulated areas.

Two compactors—16-ton and six-ton—transport waste to the Kunburudhoo disposal site. WAMCO staff are receiving training in sustainable practices. While progress has been made, challenges persist, including old garbage dumps at the city's site. The city council is developing a dedicated space for waste segregation.

The service costs MVR 150 per household, with a daily fee of 20 Laari and an additional gate fee of MVR 106. WAMCO has expanded to other islands including Meemu Fonadhoo, Kaafu Maafushi, and Himmafushi, advancing national waste management efforts.
