Work has begun on a detailed study of an archaeological site in Kaashidhoo, located in Malé Atoll, more than five years after its discovery.
Initial findings in 2020 revealed a foundation, or tharaha, within the corner of the island’s old Friday Mosque. Since then, further artefacts have been unearthed at the site in addition to the Eveylaa tharaha, adding to the growing body of knowledge about the region’s cultural and historical heritage.
The Ministry of Language, Culture and Heritage announced that the first phase of research, running from January 12 - 24, is being carried out in collaboration with the National Centre for Cultural Heritage, the University of East Anglia, Dhivehi Bahuge Academy, and the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey.
The project has brought together a diverse team that includes specialists from the National Centre for Cultural Heritage, representatives from the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy, members of the Maritime Asia Heritage Survey, and two Maldivian students studying for a Master's in the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the University of East Anglia, with the Sainsbury Research Unit
The research team is undertaking a two-week project focused on providing technical expertise in the handling and preservation of underground artefacts.
According to the Ministry, this initiative aims to share critical knowledge with participants, equipping them with the tools and understanding needed to manage and protect similar discoveries effectively.
Archaeological findings of this nature are not uncommon in the Maldives, where various artefacts and culturally significant sites have been uncovered during excavation projects across the islands.
