President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that development in islands will be guided by the aspirations of local communities.
He made these remarks during a public address in An’golhitheemu as part of his ongoing visit to islands in the North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
As part of the visit, the President met with the An’golhitheemu Island Council, Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and senior institutional leaders today at the Council Secretariat.
The Island Council highlighted several urgent issues, including the need for harbour expansion, improvements to the water and sanitation network, and the completion of the island’s fitness and recreation centre. They also requested the expedited construction of a visitor’s centre, a T-jetty, and a multi-purpose hall for the school. Additionally, the issue of coastal erosion was identified as a critical challenge.
President Dr Muizzu assured the community that these concerns would be addressed and that practical solutions would be pursued. Cabinet Ministers accompanying the President provided updates on ongoing projects in Angholitheem, underscoring the administration’s commitment to tangible progress.
The President also announced plans to develop a 20-year master plan for sustainable growth in the island, ensuring that development aligns with the aspirations of the local community. He emphasised the importance of public engagement in shaping the future of the islands, pledging to work closely with residents throughout the process.
