President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the Maldives into a country where all public services are fully digitalised, emphasising that digitalisation is vital to reducing corruption and ensuring transparent governance.
Speaking to residents of Ungoofaaru during his visit to Raa Atoll, the President assured citizens that significant efforts are underway to combat corruption, which he acknowledged as a common issue in government institutions.
Reflecting on his recent official visit to Estonia, President Dr Muizzu shared that the trip aimed to gather knowledge and secure assistance to advance the Maldives' digitalisation goals. He revealed that an agreement has been signed between the two countries, with Estonia pledging substantial support in drafting relevant laws for a comprehensive digital ecosystem in the Maldives. The President highlighted Estonia’s digital ID system as a benchmark, stating that the Maldives aims to implement a similar system as part of an integrated network.
Highlighting the importance of digitalisation, the President explained that a fully digital public service system would minimise human intervention, ensure accurate record-keeping, and eliminate opportunities for corruption and discrimination in service delivery. He noted that Estonia serves as a global model in this regard, as its digitalised services have contributed to significantly reduced corruption and increased public trust in government systems.
President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s goal to digitalise all public services within four years, emphasising that this transformation will enhance transparency, accountability, and support the Maldives' vision of becoming a developed country by 2040.
