President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that Raa Atoll will be the next destination for the expansion of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry services.

Speaking to residents of Ungoofaaru during his visit to Raa Atoll, the President pledged to launch RTL ferry services in the atoll before the end of June 2025, followed by Baa Atoll in July 2025.

Currently, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) operates RTL ferry services across all islands in nine atolls. To support the planned expansion, MTCC announced in December 2024 its plans to acquire 56 additional vessels, valued at MVR 508 million.

In addition to announcing the expansion of RTL ferry services in Raa Atoll, the President outlined plans to improve the education sector, highlighting that transforming Ungoofaaru into an urban centre would facilitate the transition to single-session schooling.

Addressing residents’ concerns, the President shared that efforts are underway to establish a Bank of Maldives (BML) branch on Dhuvaafaru island, which was not part of his visit. He assured that the facility is expected to become operational by June.

Highlighting the Government’s recent decision to amend laws governing the use, consumption, and sale of tobacco products, the President assured the public that the changes aim to promote healthier habits through preventive measures rather than creating undue advantages for any party.

Additionally, President Dr Muizzu outlined plans to accelerate key infrastructure projects in Ungoofaaru as part of efforts to transform the island into an urban centre. These include completing the reclamation project once weather conditions improve, constructing 500 housing units, and upgrading Ungoofaaru Hospital to a tertiary-level facility.
