The Burunu Boma International Sport Fishing Tournament 2025 officially began on Thursday, marking the commencement of a three-day competition taking place from May 2 to May 4 in the Maldivian waters.

Now in its latest edition, the tournament has gained a reputation as a notable event in the international angling calendar. This year’s competition has attracted nine teams from across the region, each bringing experienced anglers and high-level strategy to the contest.

Participants began fishing early Thursday morning, with official fishing hours set from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. Teams are operating in designated areas across the Maldives, selected to highlight the country’s marine biodiversity and to provide optimal fishing conditions.

Videos and updates from the teams indicate that the tournament opened with early catches, including sailfish and other species. The use of catch-and-release practices is a key feature of the tournament, reflecting its focus on sustainable sport fishing.

According to Visit Maldives Club President Ahmed Saaif, the event continues to bring together anglers from different backgrounds while also presenting the unique challenges posed by the Maldivian seas.

The tournament will conclude at 6:30 p.m. on May 4, with the official closing ceremony on May 6.
