President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that 377 sports projects are planned across the Maldives in 2025 under the Ministry of Sports and Fitness.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office today, President Dr Muizzu said that 50 projects have already been completed, while 192 are ongoing or covered by signed agreements. The total number includes new initiatives scheduled to commence later this year.
He said that one of the Government’s key goals is to establish Fitness and Recreation Centres (FRCs) on every inhabited island. Two centres have already been completed, while construction is underway on 19 more. Agreements have been signed to develop 34 additional centres this year, with work planned to begin in a further 97 islands.
The President also outlined progress on the nationwide Outdoor Gym Project. Construction is underway on four islands, with agreements signed for work on 34 more. Projects are scheduled for a further 109 islands before the end of the year.
He noted that the broader aim of these investments is to create a healthier society through increased access to exercise facilities and healthier eating. The Government aims to equip every island with an outdoor gym, a fully functioning FRC, and a children’s park by the end of next year.
President Dr Muizzu also highlighted four major developments planned within the sports sector: a skate park at Usfasgan’du, an international skate park in Hulhumalé, a racing track, and the construction of a netball and futsal complex in Malé, in line with campaign pledges.
